Among the gum trees

The eucalyptus is probably Australia's most familiar type of tree. We know the look of it; we know the smell of it. Its waxy leaves feed koalas and get played in bands. Try to find a painting of the outback that doesn't have a gum tree in it somewhere: impossible.

Eucalypts seem so ordinary to most Australians that we sometimes forget that they're not all one species. In fact, over 500 different species of eucalyptus, from shrubs to giant single trees, flourish in different parts of the country.

On South Stradbroke Island, the combination of different landscapes in a relatively confined space has given the eucalypt woodland some unique characteristics.
