What does 'Couran' mean?

Couran was always the name of this part of South Stradbroke Island. To the Kombamerri people who lived as nomads on Stradbroke and parts of the mainland, it means the tree we call Moreton Bay ash.

In other local Aborigine languages, Couran means 'dugong skirt' (or steak) or 'eldest brother'.

The first European surveyors transcribed the name as Cooran and Quaran before settling on the now familiar spelling and calling the area Couran Cove.

Ron Clarke wanted to build a world-class eco-holiday destination. He gathered a team of experts to build Couran Cove Resort.
