Activity 7: How sustainable is Couran Cove?

The purpose of this activity is to give students the opportunity to

  • understand in some depth the concept of ecologically sustainable development
  • to use criteria to make judgments about land management at Couran Cove Resort

Length and implementation of activity

Part A: Students develop criteria for judging whether a development could be considered sustainable (about 20-30 minutes).

Part B: They research the management practices at Couran Cove in relation to four areas of environmental concern and look at how well the management of resources at Couran Cove fulfills these criteria (1-2 lessons).

Part C: An important aspect of this study is to look at the interactions between the elements of the environment (30-40 minutes).
Students finish the activity by predicting the future of the Couran Cove site.

This activity is a form of the Expert Jigsaw strategy, where students form expert groups and then divide into cooperative groups to share information.

The Cross Impact Matrix is a useful method of looking at the interactions between different elements in a situation (Part C).
