Activity 8: Visions of sustainabilityThe purpose of this activity is to give students the opportunity to
Length and implementation of activityPart A: Students examine their own behaviour for underlying values and use this examination to speculate about how such behaviour might translate into a future world. Parts B, C and D: The values of particular interest are those of sustainability and peace. Peace is considered in terms of the possibility of future conflicts over the environment. Various environmental practices being carried out at Couran Cove are examined to see if they reflect these particular values. Part E: Such an examination lays the basis for considering a local place that may be degraded. Students consider what that place may be like in the future if current practices persist. They then envision that place as they would prefer it to be, and consider the steps that would need to be taken to translate their vision into reality. Students may need some explanation of the strategy of Backcasting. This is the opposite of forecasting. It involves developing a reasonable vision of what a place or a situation could be like, and working backwards to the present to see what steps need to be taken to make the vision a reality.
