Water
Where does Couran Cove Resort's water come from?
South Stradbroke Island is a big pile of sand sticking out of the ocean.
This pile sits on a solid rock base 40 metres below ground level. And
it's full of fresh water.
Any rain that falls on the island filters slowly through the topsoil
and sand, collecting in an enormous lens-shaped reservoir underground.
This fresh water doesn't mix with the sea water beneath it, but spreads
out to form a water layer from the centre of the island to the east and
west edges. On the eastern side of South Stradbroke, this water table
lies very close to the surface. Depressions in the ground fill up
immediately with fresh water as at the site of the old sand refinery called
Clayton's Lake.
The resort draws its water supply from this water table.
