Waste

Worm Farm

Along one side of the resort's waste treatment plant are six raised metal trays, each about the size of a car parking space. This is the worm farm: a much more efficient way to recycle organic waste than composting.

Worm castings become fertiliser in landscaping and revegetation projects. Excess castings or worms can be sold to the public. Particular species of worms prefer different depths in the waste in the trays. So in each tray different kinds of worm work happily together without getting in each other's way.

Learning about waste

Resort management gets everyone involved in the challenge of reducing waste. Guests-and staff-are educated about waste collection and disposal. In fact, new members of staff usually spend a week or so in the treatment plant, going through organic waste for contaminants, such as plastic.
