Industry

In the early days, Nova Scotia's economy was built on the resource-based industries of fishing, forestry and mining. Soon after, communities were established and grew up around farming and shipbuilding areas. These are still important today.

But today's economy is far more diverse. It includes information technology, the aerospace industry, medical and ocean research, tourism and the film industry.

Nova Scotia has over 2000 manufacturers, producing everything from parts for aircraft and automobiles, electronics and chemicals to carpets and leisure equipment.

In the medical field, Nova Scotia is a world leader in multi-organ transplants, cardiology research and cancer research. The province is also acknowledged as a leader in offshore and oceanographic research.

Nova Scotia's forests provide 1.7 million Christmas trees every year and 118 000 litres of maple syrup.
